SENATOR TOM GEORGE CONTINUES FIX MICHIGAN BICYCLE TOUR

George to cycle in the U.P. for the third stage of statewide bike tour

Senator Tom George, MD (20th District, R-Kalamazoo), announced today the details of his next fix Michigan bicycle tour, where he will head to the U.P. on Saturday, August 1.  Sen. George along with his son, Matt, will be cycling in the Tour Da U.P. an annual cycling event that runs from Sunday, August 2nd through Thursday, August 6th.  This event helps to support Teaching Family Homes, an organization devoted to providing assistance to families and children in need who live in the U.P. 

This year the route will begin in Gladstone and go through Gwinn, Marquette, Negaunee, and Ishpeming.  "Cycling is not only excellent exercise, it has provided a way for me to travel across our state and meet with groups and individuals where we have an opportunity to share our ideas on how we can turn our state around and fix Michigan," said Sen. Tom George.  

While in the U.P. Sen. George will be participating in the following events:
* Saturday, August 1 - Alger County Fair in Chatham
 - 5:00 PM Pig Roast, Alger County Fair

* Sunday, August 2 - Cycle from Gladstone to Marquette

* Monday, August 3 - Cycle through Ore Mining sites in Negaunee and Ishpeming
 - 5:30 - 7:30 PM Teaching Family Homes BBQ at the campus pavilion in Marquette, contact:  906.249.5437.

* Tuesday, August 4 - Open day for cyclists, Sen. George is scheduled for:
 - 7:00 - 9:00 AM Meet & Greet breakfast with the Marquette/Alger County Medical Society, 1414 Fair Avenue in Marquette, contact:  Mary Tavernini 906.360.6000.
 - 12:00 - 1:30 PM Meet & Greet lunch with the Houghton County Republicans, Tri-County Medical Group members, and community members, Pilgrim River Steak House, 47409 US 41 in Houghton, contact:  Frank Lide, Chairman 906.231.1540.
 - 2:00 - 3:00 PM Meet with Dr. Sally Or for a walking tour of the local businesses and restaurants in Calumet.

* Wednesday, August 5 - Cycle from Marquette to Eben Junction

* Thursday, August 6 - Cycle from Eben Junction to Gladstone

The Meet & Greet events listed are open to the public and media.  In between the cycling and events, Senator George will also be meeting with the media for interviews.

Earlier this week, Sen. George introduced bicycle safety legislation, SB 529, 530 and 531.  According to the Office of Highway Safety Planning, more than 2,000 Michigan bicyclists were involved in accidents with motor-vehicles of which 1,760 were injured and 17 were killed in 2007 and in 2008 there were 18 cycling fatalities.
