SENATOR TOM GEORGE COMPLETES THIRD STAGE OF BICYCLE TOUR
George Fix Michigan statewide bike tour in the U.P. a big success
Senator Tom George, MD (20th District, R-Kalamazoo) completed the third stage of his statewide Fix Michigan bicycle tour in the U.P. where he and his son, Matt, joined with the Tour Da U.P., an annual cycling event to support Teaching Family Homes. This organization is devoted to providing assistance to families and children in need from the U.P. communities.
"This stage of our Fix Michigan bicycle tour was a big success because I met with a number of individuals who are concerned about the future of our state and they are also paying attention to the Governor's race," said George. "Fixing Michigan will require us to address health care costs and the health of our state's population, in addition, we need to look at ways to create a better business environment to attract and retain jobs in Michigan."
Below is highlight of the activities and events Sen. George covered during his Fix Michigan Tour in the U.P:
* Saturday, August 1 - Alger County Fair in Chatham
* Sunday, August 2 - Cycle from Gladstone to Marquette
* Monday, August 3 - Cycle through Ore Mining sites in Negaunee and Ishpeming
- Evening BBQ with Teaching Family Homes, organizers of the Tour Da U.P.
* Tuesday, August 4 - Open day for cyclists, Sen. George attended:
- Meet & Greet breakfast with the Marquette/Alger County Medical Society in Marquette
- Meet & Greet lunch with the Houghton County Republicans, Tri-County Medical Group members, and community members in Houghton
- Afternoon walking tour of local businesses and restaurants in Calumet with Dr. Sally Or
- Evening Meet & Greet with the Marquette County Republicans and community members at the home of Dr. Chris and Betsie Wilkinson in Marquette
* Wednesday, August 5 - Cycle from Marquette to Eben Junction
- Evening Meet & Greet with the Alger County Republicans and community members in Eben Junction
* Thursday, August 6 - Cycle from Eben Junction to Gladstone
- Evening Meet & Greet with the Delta County Republicans and community members in Escanaba
- Log Rolling with third and fourth generation log rollers in Escanaba
* Friday, August 7 - Travel to Silver City in Ontonagon County
- Evening Meet & Greet with the Ontonagon County Republicans and Gogebic County Republicans in Silver City.
"Special thanks to the Republican county chairs, vice chairs, grassroots activists, and community activists who helped pull together the meet and greet events. There were a lot of individuals from the U.P. who assisted significantly in making this stage of our tour a terrific experience, said Sen. George."
While in the U.P., Sen. George also interviewed with the local papers, radio and TV stations. During this stage of the statewide Fix Michigan bicycle tour, Sen. George cycled 213 miles and traveled through 35 cities and villages in the U.P. He has cycled over 623 miles across Michigan since starting his tour this year in June.
When the legislature is not in session, Sen. George works part-time as a physician. He has nine years of legislative experience. Sen. Tom George resides in Texas Township of Kalamazoo County with his wife, Sandy. They have three children, Lauren, Maria and Matt.
