Yesterday Sen. Tom George, MD (R-Kalamazoo) and his Fix Michigan bicycle tour completed forty miles through Detroit -- in total he and his campaign has cycled 675 miles.
“Detroit is an excellent place for bicycling with light traffic, adequate roads, and courteous drivers,” said George.
Lead by Tom O’Keefe of U of D Jesuit High, the cyclists toured Hamtramck, Highland Park, the Riverfront, the Cultural Center, Fort Wayne, the Gateway Project, and various Detroit neighborhoods. Sen. George met with officials from Southwest Solutions (a non-profit working to revitalize SW Detroit). Along the tour they saw a patchwork of blight and vacant lots alongside beautiful homes and many examples of adoptive reuse and historic preservation.
The ride confirmed the potential benefits of creating a redevelopment authority for the Detroit area as Senator George has proposed.
"Fixing Michigan requires addressing problems in Detroit," said Senator George, "Later this month I will introduce legislation which would create a redevelopment authority to give local officials more tools to address the problems they face."
