GEORGE URGES VOTERS TO APPROVE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION

Candidate for Governor Tom George, M.D. throws his support in favor of the November ballot question to convene a constitutional convention.

LANSING-Candidate for Governor Tom George, M.D. (State Senate-20th District, R-Kalamazoo) throws his support in favor of the November ballot question to convene a constitutional convention.

Speaking on the Senate floor yesterday on the occasion of Michigan's 173rd birthday, George stated, "A constitutional convention offers the best single opportunity to re-craft Michigan and put it on a new path." Citing a need for major reforms in state government, George asked, "As people leave our state and our economy falters, we must ask ourselves if a government from the 1960's is still affordable and practical."

The Michigan Constitution of 1963 requires voters to answer a ballot question every 16 years on whether or not to call a constitutional convention. If approved, the voters would then select convention delegates tasked with crafting a new document that would be presented to the voters for ratification.

George finished, "As we reflect on our past it is fitting and proper that we plan for our future. It is time to bring Michigan from the atomic age to the age of the internet. It is time to reopen Michigan for business. It is time for a constitutional convention."
