GOP hopeful says rivals promise, but can't deliver
State Sen. Tom George says the root of Michigan's chronic budget problems is a population that's too fat, smokes too much and generally ignores its health.
That, he said, drives up the cost of Medicaid and state employee benefits, which suck billions of dollars from education, public safety and basic services.
The anesthesiologist from Kalamazoo is running last in a five-way Republican race for governor, polls show. Undeterred, he insists that government reforms and healthier citizens -- not just tax and spending cuts -- are critical.
